The U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the right to marry is a fundamental right extended to same-sex couples under both the Due Process and Equal Protection Clauses of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constituition. This in turn has afforded not only the same marital rights to same-sex couples that were prevoiusly only given to heterosexual couples, but its passage has also created legal obligations for same-sex couples. As a result, it is now vital that LGBTQIA individuals seek legal counsel to ensure that their legal rights are protected and that they are properly advised of their legal obligations.
